Prairie Senior Cottages believes that performing the routine tasks of daily living helps residents preserve their self-esteem and dignity. Residents are offered the opportunity to help with meal preparation and clean-up, housekeeping chores, laundry and grocery shopping.
The therapeutic cottage environment permits residents to maintain a nearly-normal lifestyle that includes fun and companionship as well as 24-hour supervision by caregivers who understand their needs and how to react to them.
Activities are specially designed to meet the needs of those with memory loss. Activities include reminiscing, memory stimulation, sensory stimulation, favorite games, story-telling, pet visits, music, and much more. Routine daily tasks are also included in the activity calendar. The goal of Prairie Senior Cottages is to provide residents with an opportunity to have “normal” days.
Person centered care promotes choice, purpose, and meaning in daily life. Before or at the time of admission, families are asked to share details about residents’ past interests, hobbies, habits, and more. This allows staff to “know” our residents from the beginning, which helps achieve a level of physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being that is each resident’s individual best.
A variety of activities are offered that are intended to benefit the whole person. Some may be household chores such as cooking, sweeping, or folding laundry. This promotes the feeling of being a useful member of the household.
Activities that provide an opportunity for self-expression include singing, drawing, or crafts.
Physical activities such as walks, playing with a pet, or tossing a ball back and forth with someone are fun and provide exercise.
